By Charles Spurgeon

“Come unto me.”
Matthew 11:28

The cry of the Christian religion is the gentle word, “Come.” The Jewish law harshly said, “Go, take heed unto thy steps as to the path in which thou shalt walk. Break the commandments, and thou shalt perish; keep them, and thou shalt live.” The law was a dispensation of terror, which drove men before it as with a scourge; the gospel draws with bands of love. Jesus is the good Shepherd going before his sheep, bidding them follow him, and ever leading them onwards with the sweet word, “Come.” The law repels, the gospel attracts. The law shows the distance which there is between God and man; the gospel bridges that awful chasm, and brings the sinner across it.

From the first moment of your spiritual life until you are ushered into glory, the language of Christ to you will be, “Come, come unto me.” As a mother puts out her finger to her little child and woos it to walk by saying, “Come,” even so does Jesus. He will always be ahead of you, bidding you follow him as the soldier follows his captain. He will always go before you to pave your way, and clear your path, and you shall hear his animating voice calling you after him all through life; while in the solemn hour of death, his sweet words with which he shall usher you into the heavenly world shall be-”Come, ye blessed of my Father.”

Nay, further, this is not only Christ’s cry to you, but, if you be a believer, this is your cry to Christ-”Come! come!” You will be longing for his second advent; you will be saying, “Come quickly, even so come Lord Jesus.” You will be panting for nearer and closer communion with him. As his voice to you is “Come,” your response to him will be, “Come, Lord, and abide with me. Come, and occupy alone the throne of my heart; reign there without a rival, and consecrate me entirely to thy service.”

President Arrives at UN Summit in Copenhagen
President Obama left is due to arrive in Denmark around 8:30 a.m. local time on Friday, according to U.S. officials.  He will give a brief address at a plenary session with other world leaders and emphasize the renewed U.S. commitment to show leadership on global warming, but he is not expected to be more specific about Washington’s pledge to help provide funding for poor countries dealing with climate change.  That pledge is tied to monitoring, reporting and verification requirements by China and other big developing countries on their emissions curbs. China has resisted such requirements.  One U.S. official said progress was being made on that issue and others ahead of Obama’s arrival. “We’re making progress on all of our outstanding issues with the Chinese. We have a good dialogue going and there are other parties as well,” the official said.  “There’s still a way to go on all the issues and there’s not much time left, so we certainly can’t predict at this point what the outcome of the conference will be,” he said.

Pray for wisdom with those leaders representing the United States and its citizens at the Copenhagen Conference.

President to Meet with Russian President
President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitri Medvedev will meet today to discuss efforts to reach a new arms control treaty.  The two will meet on the sidelines of the climate change conference in Copenhagen.  U.S. and Russian negotiators have been trying for months to work out an agreement to replace the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START).  Earlier this week, the U.S. State Department said the two sides were getting close to a deal. The United States says it wants to keep the verification system that was in the old START treaty. Moscow says it no longer wants U.S. inspectors in its main missile plant.

Pray for a successful meeting between President Obama and President Medvedev.  Pray for the protection of our nation in these important talks.

Major Offensive Against Taliban Planned
Brig. Gen. Larry Nicholson is prepping his Marines to launch a major offensive against the Taliban in southern Afghanistan – in what could be a game-changer in the operations here.  Nicholson, the senior Marine commander in Afghanistan, will in the coming weeks receive hundreds of reinforcements, the first wave of forces to deploy as part of President Obama’s surge. That will allow Nicholson to pierce the Taliban stronghold of Marjeh – a 100-square-mile region that must, in the words of another senior Marine officer, be “cracked open.”

Pray for the courage and safety of our soldiers as they prepare to launch a major offensive against Taliban terrorists in Afghanistan.

“And lay thy foundations with sapphires.”
Isaiah 54:11

Not only that which is seen of the church of God, but that which is unseen, is fair and precious. Foundations are out of sight, and so long as they are firm it is not expected that they should be valuable; but in Jehovah’s work everything is of a piece, nothing slurred, nothing mean. The deep foundations of the work of grace are as sapphires for preciousness, no human mind is able to measure their glory. We build upon the covenant of grace, which is firmer than adamant, and as enduring as jewels upon which age spends itself in vain. Sapphire foundations are eternal, and the covenant abides throughout the lifetime of the Almighty. Another foundation is the person of the Lord Jesus, which is clear and spotless, everlasting and beautiful as the sapphire; blending in one the deep blue of earth’s ever rolling ocean and the azure of its all embracing sky. Once might our Lord have been likened to the ruby as he stood covered with his own blood, but now we see him radiant with the soft blue of love, love abounding, deep, eternal. Our eternal hopes are built upon the justice and the faithfulness of God, which are clear and cloudless as the sapphire. We are not saved by a compromise, by mercy defeating justice, or law suspending its operations; no, we defy the eagle’s eye to detect a flaw in the groundwork of our confidence-our foundation is of sapphire, and will endure the fire.

The Lord himself has laid the foundation of his people’s hopes. It is matter for grave enquiry whether our hopes are built upon such a basis. Good works and ceremonies are not a foundation of sapphires, but of wood, hay, and stubble; neither are they laid by God, but by our own conceit. Foundations will all be tried ere long: woe unto him whose lofty tower shall come down with a crash, because based on a quicksand. He who is built on sapphires may await storm or fire with equanimity, for he shall abide the test.

Heavenly Father, we approach you today with a couple requests.  First, we ask that you give traveling mercies to President Obama and keep him safe as he travels to Copenhagen.  Secondly, we ask that everyone involved in discussions on climate be wise and discerning.  You are Sovereign, and we believe you still control all that occurs in, on and to the earth.  Amen.

President Travels to UN Summit in Copenhagen
President Barack Obama heads to Copenhagen today to help secure a U.N. climate pact.  Obama is expected to arrive in the Danish capital on Friday morning, joining about 120 other world leaders to finish a complicated process of reaching a political agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fight global warming. With his top domestic priority of healthcare reform legislation percolating in Washington, the president plans to stay in Copenhagen less than a day.  The United States has proposed to cut its greenhouse gas emissions in the range of 17 percent by 2020 compared with 2005 levels. That corresponds to a 3 percent reduction from 1990 levels, the baseline used by the European Union and others.

Pray for safe travel for President Obama as he travels to Copenhagen for the U.N. Summit on Climate Change.  Pray for wisdom to rise above politics in this meeting.

President Faces Small Business Credit Crunch
The small business credit crunch is still deepening: Major banks cut their small business loan balances by another $1 billion in October, according to a Treasury report released late yesterday.  The 22 banks that got the most help from the Treasury’s bailout programs have decreased their small business lending by a collective $11.6 billion since April, when the Treasury began requiring them to file monthly reports. The banks’ total lending has fallen 4.3% in that six-month period, to $257.7 billion.  President Obama met Monday with CEOs from a dozen of the nation’s biggest banks to pressure them to do more to rebuild the economy they helped blast apart.  “We expect some results,” Obama told the bankers. “I’m getting too many letters from small businesses who explain that they are credit worthy, and banks that they’ve had a long-term relationship with are still having problems giving them loans.”

Pray for the recovery of our economy.  Pray for solutions for small businesses struggling to stay open while credit has dried up.

First Lady Appeals for a Spirit of Christmas Giving
First Lady Michelle Obama yesterday appealed to Americans to dig deep and donate toys for needy children, urging them not to forget older kids in the “tween” years.  “We’ve got, you know, more than enough toys for younger kids. And one of the challenges that this program has is really finding toys for the older kids,” she said as she toured a collection center for the “Toys for Tots” scheme.  “And those are the bins for the kids that are 11-14, and as you can see, they’re almost empty here.”  Obama brought with her some 500 toys donated by White House staff, but said: “We only brought 30 percent of what we actually collected because that’s all that we could fit into the van, but we are still collecting as we speak.”  She said everyone at the White House had stepped in to support the effort, which was first launched in 1947 by the Marines.  President Barack Obama and his wife both donated gifts to the campaign, but no details were made available except that their daughters Sasha, 8, and Malia, 11, had helped picked toys for children in their age range.

Pray for families across America struggling with unemployment.  Pray for Americans to give at Christmas to ease the pain of their neighbors.

By Charles Spurgeon

“They go from strength to strength.”
Psalms 84:7

They go from strength to strength. There are various renderings of these words, but all of them contain the idea of progress.

Our own good translation of the authorized version is enough for us this morning. “They go from strength to strength.” That is, they grow stronger and stronger. Usually, if we are walking, we go from strength to weakness; we start fresh and in good order for our journey, but by-and-by the road is rough, and the sun is hot, we sit down by the wayside, and then again painfully pursue our weary way. But the Christian pilgrim having obtained fresh supplies of grace, is as vigorous after years of toilsome travel and struggle as when he first set out. He may not be quite so elate and buoyant, nor perhaps quite so hot and hasty in his zeal as he once was, but he is much stronger in all that constitutes real power, and travels, if more slowly, far more surely. Some gray-haired veterans have been as firm in their grasp of truth, and as zealous in diffusing it, as they were in their younger days; but, alas, it must be confessed it is often otherwise, for the love of many waxes cold and iniquity abounds, but this is their own sin and not the fault of the promise which still holds good: “The youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary, and they shall walk and not faint.” Fretful spirits sit down and trouble themselves about the future. “Alas!” say they, “we go from affliction to affliction.” Very true, O thou of little faith, but then thou goest from strength to strength also. Thou shalt never find a bundle of affliction which has not bound up in the midst of it sufficient grace. God will give the strength of ripe manhood with the burden allotted to full-grown shoulders.
