Description
How should Christians live their faith in the public arena? Twenty years ago, the first edition of Chuck Colson’s Kingdoms in Conflict became a bestseller, a must-read for people interested in politics and the relationship between church and state. Now, with a passion for truth and moved by the urgency of the times we live in, Colson has written God and Government, re-voicing his powerful and enduring message for our post-9/11 world. In an era when Christianity is being attacked from every side— books being written charging Christians with being theocrats and trying to impose their views on an unwilling culture—what is the message of the Christian church? What does the Bible say, and what do we learn from history about the proper relationship between faith and culture? Appealing to scripture, reason, and history, this book tackles society’s most pressing and divisive issues. New stories and examples reflect the realities of today, from the clash with radical Islam to the deep division between “reds” and “blues.” In an era of angry finger-pointing, Colson furnishes a unique insider’s perspective that can’t be pigeonholed as either “religious right” or “religious left.” Whatever your political or religious stance, this book will give you a different understanding of Christianity. If you’re a Christian, it will help you to both examine and defend your faith. If you’ve been critical of the new religious right, you’ll be shocked at what you learn. Probing both secular and religious values, God and Government critiques each fairly, sides with neither, and offers a hopeful, fair-minded perspective that is sorely needed in today’s hyper-charged atmosphere.

Daily Prayer

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Heavenly Father, today is an important day for our nation.  You tell us that you ordain all authority to do your purposes; we ask that you give the president wisdom in guiding this nation.  As we watch and pray for him while he discusses the policies he believes will be solutions, we ask that you be with us, too.  May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Amen.

First Lady Announces Support for Military Families
Michelle Obama announced yesterday that President Obama’s 2011 budget will propose $8.8 billion in funding for programs to support military families – a 3 percent increase at a time when Mr. Obama is calling for a freeze in spending on many non-defense domestic programs.  “In the history of our all volunteer force, we’ve never asked so much of so few,’’ Mrs. Obama said.  “Mrs. Obama said. “We’ve seen the sacrifices on the home front.’’  Mrs. Obama said the budget, to be unveiled by the White House next Monday, would include $1.9 billion in funds for counseling and support to military spouses and families; $1.3 billion to reduce shortages in military child care; more money (she did not provide a precise figure) to improve and build schools on military bases; $84 million for career development for military spouses, and $14 million in new funding for Coast Guard housing.

Pray for the families of our soldiers who continue to sacrifice for the freedom of our nation.

President Obama Freezes White House Salaries
President Barack Obama announced he will freeze the salaries of senior White House officials and other top political appointees for savings of $4 million in fiscal 2011.  The freeze will affect White House staff earning more than $100,000 a year. It will be expanded to include political appointees working across the executive branch and in all agencies. The total number of people affected will be 1,200 for a saving of $4 million in fiscal 2011 beginning Oct. 1, the official said.  For the second year in a row, Obama will also eliminate bonuses for political staff across the executive branch, which will affect 3,000 people.

Pray for the families of our soldiers who continue to sacrifice for our nation.

Troop Levels Increase for Support in Haiti
The U.S. ramped up its presence in Haiti to more than 15,400 soldiers, sailors and airmen.  The U.S. has over 4,700 “boots on the ground,” including 3,000 soldiers from the Army’s 82nd Airborne division, and another 10,700 service people on ships off Haiti, Lt. Gen. P.K. Keen, commander of the U.S. military’s operations in Haiti, said today. The military is helping build a 5,000-bed post-surgical hospital for Haitians recovering from injuries, he said.

Pray for shelter, food and water for all those displaced families.  Pray for physical and spiritual healing for the nation.  Pray for nations around the globe to join in an effort to rebuild the nation to support Haiti’s families.

Today's Devotional

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

By Charles Spurgeon

“I came not to send peace on earth, but a sword.”
Matthew 10:34

The Christian will be sure to make enemies. It will be one of his objects to make none; but if to do the right, and to believe the true, should cause him to lose every earthly friend, he will count it but a small loss, since his great Friend in heaven will be yet more friendly, and reveal himself to him more graciously than ever. O ye who have taken up his cross, know ye not what your Master said? “I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother; and a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.” Christ is the great Peacemaker; but before peace, he brings war. Where the light cometh, the darkness must retire. Where truth is, the lie must flee; or, if it abideth, there must be a stern conflict, for the truth cannot and will not lower its standard, and the lie must be trodden under foot. If you follow Christ, you shall have all the dogs of the world yelping at your heels. If you would live so as to stand the test of the last tribunal, depend upon it the world will not speak well of you. He who has the friendship of the world is an enemy to God; but if you are true and faithful to the Most High, men will resent your unflinching fidelity, since it is a testimony against their iniquities. Fearless of all consequences, you must do the right. You will need the courage of a lion unhesitatingly to pursue a course which shall turn your best friend into your fiercest foe; but for the love of Jesus you must thus be courageous. For the truth’s sake to hazard reputation and affection, is such a deed that to do it constantly you will need a degree of moral principle which only the Spirit of God can work in you; yet turn not your back like a coward, but play the man. Follow right manfully in your Master’s steps, for he has traversed this rough way before you. Better a brief warfare and eternal rest, than false peace and everlasting torment.

Daily Prayer

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Heavenly Father, we thank you that President Obama is working on policies designed to help the middle class.  We ask that they would have their intended positive effects while not harming others or resulting in unintended consequences.  Please be with us all as we continue to work through the trials the nation faces together. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
