Daily Prayer

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Lord, the debt of our nation weighs heavily on us, and our leaders are feeling the pressure that comes with being a debtor nation.  We are reminded of the sentiment of our first president, Washington: “Avoiding likewise the accumulation of debt, not only by shunning occasions of expense, but by vigorous exertions in time of peace to discharge the debts which unavoidable wars have occasioned, not ungenerously throwing upon posterity the burthen which.”  Please help us individually and corporately be responsible for the funds with which you entrust us.  Amen.

Secretary Clinton Calls Debt National Security Risk
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said yesterday “outrageous” advice from former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan helped create record U.S. budget deficits that put national security at risk.  Clinton also said the massive U.S. foreign debt had sapped U.S. strength around the world.  “It breaks my heart that 10 years ago we had a balanced budget, that we were on the way of paying down the debt of the United States of America,” Clinton said.  “We have to address this deficit and the debt of the United States as a matter of national security not only as a matter of economics,” Clinton said. “I do not like to be in a position where the United States is a debtor nation to the extent that we are.”  Having to rely on foreign creditors hit “our ability to protect our security, to manage difficult problems and to show the leadership that we deserve,” she said.  “The moment of reckoning cannot be put off forever,” she said. “I really honestly wish I could turn the clock back.”

Pray for a recovery for the American economy.  Please pray for relief and provision for the millions of unemployed Americans.  Pray for leadership to reduce our nation’s debt.

Secretary Gates Warns of Europe’s Pacifism
Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said yesterday that public and political opposition to the military had grown so great in Europe that it was directly affecting operations in Afghanistan and impeding the alliance’s broader security goals.  “The demilitarization of Europe — where large swaths of the general public and political class are averse to military force and the risks that go with it — has gone from a blessing in the 20th century to an impediment to achieving real security and lasting peace in the 21st,” he told NATO officers and officials.  A perception of European weakness, he warned, could provide a “temptation to miscalculation and aggression” by hostile powers.

Pray for the safety and protection of our soldiers fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan.  Pray for support from our nation’s allies in fighting the war on terror.

President Obama to Announce Debt Commissioners
President Barack Obama’s four appointments to the bipartisan debt panel he established last week include the head of manufacturing giant Honeywell and a former top-ranking Federal Reserve official.  Obama will name David Cote, chief executive officer at Honeywell International, and former Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Alice Rivlin to the panel today. He will also appoint Andy Stern, president of the Service Employees International Union, and Ann Fudge, the former chief executive officer of Young & Rubicam Brands.  Obama established the panel last week to find a way to get the country’s massive budget deficit under control.

Pray for the Holy Spirit to lead our President and his staff to do the Lord’s will.

President Hosts Healthcare Summit Today
President Obama unveiled a detailed proposal earlier this week for reforming the U.S. healthcare system, confirming that the bipartisan summit today won’t be an exercise in starting from scratch. Instead, he offered a fully fleshed-out plan based on the existing Democratic bills.  President Obama invited congressional leaders from both parties to offer their best ideas. The president said the administration is committed to extending insurance coverage significantly, improving the quality of care and controlling costs. However, President Obama hasn’t convinced the public that the problems in the system justify such a costly overhaul. New features in the White House’s draft include a ban on drug makers paying rivals to delay generic versions of prescription medicines and an initiative to have federal bureaucrats review insurance premiums.

Pray for wisdom as our President guides new policy for our nation’s healthcare system.

President Obama Supports Free Markets
Declaring himself an “ardent believer in the free market,” President Obama tried to rally business leaders yesterday to support the administration’s goals of health-care reform, climate legislation and financial regulation.  In a speech to members of the Business Roundtable, Obama sought to strike a balance between his recent populist rhetoric — aimed mainly against banks and the financial industry — and an appeal to the business community to remember that their corporate interests and the country’s broader economic interests are linked.  “You create the jobs,” the president said . “You develop new products and cutting-edge technologies. And you create the supply chains that make it possible for smaller businesses to open their doors. So I want everyone in this room to succeed. . . . Because I firmly believe that America’s success in large part depends on your success.”  He continued, “But I also believe this: Government has a vital, if limited, role to play in fostering sustained economic growth.”

Pray for a recovery for the American economy.  Please pray for relief and provision for the millions of unemployed Americans.

Governors Report Sharp Declines in State Revenue
The commander of international forces in Afghanistan said that the southern province of Kandahar was likely to be the next target of operations to eradicate the Taliban.  US General Stanley McChrystal, commander of 121,000 US and NATO troops in Afghanistan, said a major offensive now in its second week in a poppy-growing valley in Helmand province was a “model for the future”.

Pray for the safety and protection of our soldiers fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan.
