President Targets New Effort to Improve Education
At a meeting yesterday with state governors, President Obama spoke about new efforts to improve education for college and for jobs.   Obama plans to create college and career-ready standards in the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Last year the president challenged states to develop standards and assessments that could encourage children to work hard to graduate from high school prepared for college and the workplace.  The president is calling for a redesigned Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The act aims to better teacher preparation to improve classroom instruction. The goal is to help states improve education to successfully prepare students for college and the workplace.  “America’s prosperity has always rested on how well we educate our children—but never more so than today,” said President Barack Obama.

Pray for our President to choose to reinforce our nation’s education system.  Pray that values and our nation’s Christian heritage return to educational curriculums.

Death Toll in Afghanistan Reaches 1,000
The U.S. death toll in Afghanistan has reached a grim milestone – 1,000 American troops have been killed since the war began nine years ago.  And that number is expected to rise as the largest military offensive since the fall of the Taliban continues in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan.  Twelve U.S. Marines have been killed in the province since Operation Together began on Feb. 13 in the Marjah district, according to the Pentagon.  The offensive is expected to last several more weeks as 15,000 U.S., NATO and Afghan forces push out the Taliban in heavily mined, poppy fields.  Gen. David Petraeus, head of U.S. Central Command, warned that more casualties are expected.”These types of efforts are hard, and they’re hard all the time,” he said. “I don’t use words like ‘optimist’ or ‘pessimist.’ I use ‘realist.’”

Pray for the safety and protection of our soldiers fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Governors Report Sharp Declines in State Revenue
States again saw sharp declines in tax collections in the last quarter of 2009 — a record fifth straight quarterly drop, according to a new report that predicts more looming spending cuts or tax increases.  Overall, revenue from state tax collections dropped 4.1 percent for the quarter compared to the same quarter in 2008, the Rockefeller Institute of Government reported Tuesday.   The institute said that states that already have slashed spending or raised taxes will need to do more. Beleaguered governments have been cutting back on schools, social programs and prison costs — such as by releasing inmates early.

Pray for a recovery for the American economy.  Please pray for relief and provision for the millions of unemployed Americans.

Today's Devotional

By Betty Miller

The only God our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord.

You are in Christ Jesus, who had become for us wisdom from God – that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.  Can you fathom the mysteries of God?  Can you probe the limits of the Almighty?  They are higher than the heavens – what can you do?  They are deeper than the depths of the grave – what can you know?

[We] make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.  His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known.

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.  The wisdom that comes from heaven is first all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.

Pray today for President Obama and his closest advisors to ask God for the wisdom he promises so generously to give.

President Welcomes Vote on Senate Jobs Bill
President Barack Obama welcomed a U.S. Senate vote that advanced a modest job-creation bill yesterday, calling it an “important step forward” and vowing to work with both major parties to pass legislation.  “The American people want to see Washington put aside partisan differences and make progress on jobs,” Obama said in a statement after the newest Senate Republican bucked his party and sided with Democrats on a $15 billion package, overcoming a procedural hurdle that sets up a final vote this week.  “This is one of many efforts we need to tackle our economic challenges, and we will continue to work with Congress on additional job creation measures,” Obama said. “Jobs remain our top priority, and I look forward to working with members from both parties to get legislation signed and the American people back to work.”

Pray for a recovery for the American economy.  Please pray for relief and provision for the millions of unemployed Americans.

General Mullen Warns of Countering Iran
The top U.S. military commander Michael Mullen said yesterday that a military strike wouldn’t decisively counter Iran’s nuclear program, calling on more diplomatic and economic pressures to be applied to solve the Iranian nuclear issue.  Mullen said in a Pentagon briefing that no military strike “will be in and of itself decisive,” on the Iranian issue.  Instead, Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said he supported using diplomatic and economic means to solve the Issue.  Iran has been at the center of an international dispute over its nuclear plan. The United States and its Western allies have been accusing Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons under the disguise of a civilian program. Iran has denied the accusation and stressed its nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes.

Pray for wisdom for the President and his advisors in dealing with Iran both diplomatically and militarily.

Haitian Earthquake Victims Fighting Over Relief
Haitian earthquake victims traded blows and wrestled over plastic shelter materials being urgently distributed by authorities to improve flimsy survivors’ camps before the onset of rains.   More than five weeks after the magnitude 7 earthquake that reduced parts of the capital, Port-au-Prince, to rubble, Haiti’s government and its foreign aid partners say providing shelter for the more than 1 million left homeless by the quake has become the top priority.  Some downpours this month heralding the start of the rainy season in mid-March have added urgency to the need to improve shelter conditions for hundreds of thousands of quake victims camped out across the capital.

Pray for relief for the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

Who redeems your life from the pit.

Their Redeemer is strong; the Lord Almighty is his name.  I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death.  Where are your plagues?  Where is your destruction?

Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death – that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.  Whosoever believes in the Son has eternal life; but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.

For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.  When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.  This includes you, because you believed.

Pray today for those believers who work in the White House to be confident in their faith in Christ.

Scripture references:  Ps. 103:4; Jer. 50:34; Hos. 13:14; Heb. 2:14,15; John 3:36; Col. 3:3,4; 2 Thess. 1:10.

Dear Lord, as we start off this week, we realize it is going to be a major one and we seek you and your will throughout it all.  Today, our president has posted his ideas for healthcare reform, is meeting with Republicans later this week, and has promised conclusive action; we ask that you would be with him and help him listen to the desires of the people he represents in this process.  Amen.
