By Betty Miller

Serve the Lord with great humility and with tears.

Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and give his life as a ransom for many.

If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, “We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.”

Now this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, in the holiness and sincerity that are from God. We have done so not according to worldly wisdom but according to God’s grace. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.

Today pray for our legislators in both the Senate and House of Representatives, to wisely consider that they are elected to represent the people of the nation and not serve themselves only.

Scripture references: Acts 20:19. Matt. 20:26-28. Gal. 6:3. Rom. 12:3. Luke 17:10. 2 Cor. 1:12. 2 Cor. 4:7.

Daily Prayer

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Almighty God and Father, Our hearts are weary and torn, and we feel distress in our spirits because we have been through so much in observing the House of Representatives deal contentiously with one another. As a nation, we do not desire to be divided; yet as we each consider issues from our own perspectives, we may be in danger of losing Yours. Help us, O Lord, to humble ourselves under Your mighty hand, and then to find confidence in Your sovereignty.

Daily Devotional

By Betty Miller

This God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.

O Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, you have done marvelous things; things planned long ago. Lord, you have assigned me my portion amd my cup.

He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; you love, O Lord, endures forever – do not abandon the works of your hands.

As you pray today, remember all those who work for the agencies of the Department of the Interior, including with our Native American tribes peoples and in our National Parks.

Scripture references: Ps. 48:14; Isa. 25:1; Ps. 16:5; Ps. 23:3,4; Ps. 73:23-26; Ps. 31:21; Ps. 138:8

Daily Prayer

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Merciful Father, You have reminded us in your Word that your thoughts are not our thoughts, neither are your ways our ways. We are living in such distressing and divisive times, when it seems that chaos controls more than calm does. Create in us today, Lord, a calm spirit and a tender heart. Help us see past the issues that beset us, so that we may go out in joy and be led forth in your peace. Amen.

Daily Prayer

By Betty Miller

Hope does not disappoint.

I am the Lord; those who hope in me will not be disappointed.  Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him.  You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you.  Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord, is the Rock eternal.  Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him.  He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.  I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed.

God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised; he confirmed it with an oath.  God did this so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged.  We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.  It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf.

Pray today for Secretary of defense Robert Gates and the various Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon whose decisions impact our nation as a whole, and many families individually.

Scripture references:  Rom. 5:5; Isa. 49:23; Jer. 17:7; Isa. 26:3,4; Ps. 62:5,6; 2 Tim. 1:12; Heb. 6:17-20.
