Lawmakers from both parties are signaling they will do everything in their power to stop the Obama Administration from launching another round of military base closures across the U.S. as part of Pentagon cost-cutting measures.
Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are moving closer to a vote that would make English the official language of the United States. The bill would also establish English as a requirement for naturalization.
Pray about the things that make and keep America strong – our military, our melting-pot culture, our system of laws.

Senate leaders said Wednesday they were changing President Obama’s jobs package to add a 5.6 percent tax on income above $1 million, which Senator Harry Reid said would be brought up for a vote next week.
Illinois Senator Mark Kirk is expected to recover cognitive functions but could have some physical impairment following a weekend stroke, according to the neurosurgeon who operated on Kirk Monday.
Pray for the recovery and rehabilitation of Senator Kirk, and ongoing rehabilitation for Gabrielle Giffords.

The aviation industry is hopeful that lawmakers will act quickly to prevent another shutdown of the Federal Aviation Administration at the end of January, although it is unlikely that Congress will reach a long-term bill.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nevada) vowed to move forward with the controversial online piracy bill despite White House concerns and actions of industry groups like Yahoo, Google and Wikipedia.
Pray for both House and Senate members as they return to negotiating the nation’s legislative business.

Representative Diane Black (Tennessee) and 71 other House members introduced a nonbinding resolution voicing concern over President Obama’s recess appointments of four administration nominees last week.
Senator Mark Kirk (Illinois), one of the chief authors of the amendment imposing stiff sanctions on the Central Bank of Iran, said the country’s talk of closing the Strait of Hormuz to oil tankers is self-defeating and an empty threat.
Pray that Congress in this new term will attend more to the nation’s business and less to political rhetoric.

Senator Mitch McConnell (Kentucky) said the President has arrogantly circumvented the Senate in his recess-appointment suggesting his move “fundamentally endangers” the check on “excesses of the executive branch.”
Representative Gabrielle Giffords (Arizona) will participate in a public commemoration of the shooting event one year ago. Bells will ring across Tucson, numerous church services will be held, with a candlelight vigil in the evening.
Pray about the angry rhetoric that is forecast to occur this year among Congressional members and the President.

Representative Chris Van Hollen (Maryland) said the idea to drug-test those seeking unemployment insurance is “insulting” to out-of-work Americans and does nothing to address why people are struggling to find jobs.
House Speaker John Boehner (Ohio) has appointed eight members to serve on a conference committee on the payroll tax-cut extension, but Senator Dick Durbin (Illinois) says there is little chance the Senate will do the same.
Pray that in 2012 the Congress will do less partisan bickering and find ways to cooperate to benefit Americans.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (Texas) said that President Obama “absolutely” should use his executive power to continue the unemployment benefits and payroll tax cut extension since Congress seems to be gridlocked.
Congressman Paul Ryan (Wisconsin) has backed a new proposal that would give seniors a choice between private insurance and the existing Medicare program, after an earlier plan submitted by him was slammed by opponents.
Pray about the tense relationships that exist among the legislators in both chambers and on both sides of the aisle.

House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner (Ohio) said one of his top intentions for the new year is to win passage of a bill to cut the record – and still mounting – U.S. debt that “hangs over America like a wet blanket.”
Senator Claire McCaskill (Missouri) claims that House members circumvented the chamber’s ban on earmarks by inserting $834 million worth into the defense authorization bill.
Pray that our Congress will take a hard bipartisan look at the level of federal spending in all areas.

Representative Charles Rangel New York) renewed his call for a mandatory military draft to ensure the demands of the U.S. armed forces are not met only by lower-income Americans, but is a duty shared across all levels.
House and Senate appropriators are laboring to produce a $900 billion omnibus bill by the beginning of next week. Failure to reach such a deal could result in a government shutdown when current funding runs out December 16.
Pray that Congress will be able to complete its essential work before embarking on their holiday recesses.
