He Will Respond

Much like America, Hannah’s cultural environment was not conducive to great prayer. The people of Israel had lapsed from the high moral standards set up by Moses. Hannah’s home environment was not conducive to great dreams, either. Her husband Elkanah had a good heart, but his other wife had children while Hannah was barren. Therefore, when they journeyed each year from their home to the temple at Shiloh, Hannah’s most ardent prayer was for a child.

“In bitterness of soul Hannah wept much and prayed to the Lord.”

I Samuel 1:10

In humble submission Hannah prayed, promising she would dedicate her son to the Lord. And in His perfect way and timing, God eventually answered. Her son, Samuel, grew to be one of the Bible’s greatest prophets whose words and life still inspire believers today.

It may sometimes seem your prayers for the nation and the military are going unheeded, and it’s easy to become bitter and frustrated. Yet allow Hannah’s story to be an encouragement to you that as you persistently and passionately seek His will for our country and Troops, He will ultimately respond … and likely inspire you in the process.

Today’s Prayer

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

Father, we acknowledge You as the author of justice. We pray for the members of the Senate this week as they hold confirmation hearings on Supreme Court nominee, Elena Kagan.  We pray that You will give them wisdom in their questioning, and enable her to be forthright and complete in her answers. We also pray for Senator Byrd’s family, friends and the people of the state of West Virgina who are coping this morning with the passing of this faithful  lawmaker and leader.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Trusting in God’s Endgame

A century ago, a New Jersey dentist named Charles E. Welch believed that God was calling him to the mission field in Africa. But shortly before the time of departure, his wife was found to have a disabling illness that made it impossible for her to relocate to such a harsh climate. Welch was devastated, and believed for a while that his desire to serve God would never be realized.

“The desire of the righteous ends only in good, but the hope of the wicked only in wrath.”

Proverbs 11:23

But his father, the communion steward at his local church, had found a technique to pasteurize Concord grape juice for use in the services. Welch began to sell the beverage as a means to raise money for ministries. The Welch Grape Juice Company flourished and is a market leader still today. In the final analysis, Charles Welch accomplished more for missions than he would have had he followed his original plan.

God promises that your desires will end in good. As you pray today, recognize anew that He has a definite plan for you … and for the nation. What’s happening may not seem to make much sense, but never doubt He’ll work it out in the end to accomplish His glory.

Dear Father, thank you for your love for us all! In your perfect love, continue to reveal Yourself to our president, drawing him powerfully to Your Word. Guide him each day to make the decisions You have purposed. Your word says, “The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD; YOU direct it like a watercourse wherever YOU please.”

Turning on the Light

“It dawned on me.” “The fog lifted and I finally understood.” “Let’s shed some light on the subject.” These are phrases people use to describe what happens when they gain insight or discern a previously hidden truth.

“And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good. “

Genesis 1:3-4

Maybe at times you’ve wanted a light bulb to be turned on in your mind and spirit because you felt “in the dark” about how to live a more intentionally godly life. When young, perhaps you were discouraged from asking questions about spiritual matters. Now, in adulthood, you feel unprepared for life’s inevitable ups and downs.

God created light. First He created physical light and then He created inner light to help you understand who He is, who you are and what He wants. In His timing He sent His Son Jesus, who He called the Light of the World. Jesus Christ offers meaning to your life. He wants to shed light on your confusion and help you understand what you can do to live a God-honoring life.

Today, on this Memorial Day, as we remember those who gave their lives for our freeedom, let us also pray that our President and leaders will seek the Light that only God can give.

It Takes All Kinds

Have you ever wondered if it makes a difference how many people pray for a situation? Does it matter whether you pray from a chair or on your knees, or in a church or on a mountain top? How often and how long should you pray?

“Many people had gathered and were praying.”

Acts 12:12

Teaching throughout Scripture support solitary prayer as well as public prayer, and in all positions and places. Jesus prayed privately and in groups. Israel gathered as a nation to pray. Daniel prayed three times a day. God’s people prayed standing up, kneeling, and on their faces.

Whatever mechanics you use, the Bible holds to these truths: Romans 8:26 says the Holy Spirit helps you pray. In Mark 11:24, Jesus says to pray in faith. I John 5:14 says to pray according to God’s will. In “The Lord’s Prayer,” Jesus gives a pattern for prayer. In Mark 9:29, Jesus says some cases require prayer and fasting. Ephesians 6:18 says to “pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.”

Whenever, wherever, and in whatever way…pray for your country, leaders, and troops.

Robert F. Hale

Robert F. Hale, Under Secretary of Defense, Comptroller and Chief Financial Officer

Robert F. Hale was born in Fairfield, California.  He attended Stanford University, graduating with honors and receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and statistics.   He earned a Master’s degree in operations research from Stanford, and later a Master of Business Administration from George Washington University.

He spent three years on active duty as an officer of the United States Navy, serving with a Navy security group first in Okinawa, Japan and then in Washington, D.C. After completing his tour with the Navy in 1972, he took a civilian position at the Center for Naval Analyses, serving as an analyst and later a study director. In 1975, Hale joined Logistic Management Institute (LMI), a non-profit consulting firm specializing in service to the federal government. He was elected as a fellow of the institute, and eventually headed LMI’s acquisitions and grants management group.

In public service, he has held key positions at the Congressional Budget Office. During the Clinton Administration he was the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Financial Management and Comptroller (1994-2001).  When he left the Air Force position, he was elected as the executive director of the American Society of Military Comptrollers.  President Barack Obama nominated him to his current position in January 2009, and he was confirmed to that appointment one month later. As chief financial officer of the Department of Defense he is the principal adviser to Secretary of Defense Gates on all fiscal matters.

IN THE NEWS: Warning against waste, Defense Secretary Gates is ordering a top-to-bottom paring of the military bureaucracy in search of at least $10 billion in annual savings needed to prevent an erosion of U.S. combat power. Gates has also given verbal approval to the governors of Alabama, Mississippi and Florida for Title 32 status for National Guardsmen to help combat the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
